During our November meeting, Mike Lantz entertained us with his thoughts and comments, and experiences with the National Novel Writers Month, commonly known as NaNoWriMo.
Mike introduced his presentation by expressing his high interest in NaNoWriMo. He said he always liked to write and dreamed of writing a novel. He began one, but never finished it. One day he was approached by a woman who told him, "You are going to write for NaNoWriMo." She explained what it was. Mike thought it would be impossible for a working person to write 50,000 words in thirty days. But he investigated it on their website, and became convinced that he could do this.
So on October 31, he wrote a 3-page synopsis along with a chapter-by-chapter outline. Then on November 1, he began writing. This was a few years ago. Every year since then, Mike has joined in the competition and each year has won the certificate which the organization awards for completing at least a 50,000 word treatise.
Mike then distributed an outline to the ETWG group in attendance. He said how he had had a conversation with his brother and how hard it is to stop once he begins to write. Mike detailed his plot of action.
He rises at 5:30 a.m., and writes for 30 minutes. On weekends, he writes in the morning while the rest of the family sleeps in. He also takes a few days off from work.
Kay Sellers added to the discussion by explaining her predicament for not finishing more than 25,000 words. She caught the spark from Mike, but she hadn't done any research/outline prior to November 1, and felt that this prevented time to finish 50,000 words in November.
Mike encouraged the members to go to www.nanowrimo.org. He said he believes that this is an exercise in writing as well as an educational experience. He also stated that he likes to get on the "Buddy List" by signing up, registering, and establishing his list. He noted that you do not have to be acquainted with anyone, but it is a good way to network. He also finds it worthwhile to post his word count and enter into competition with others. It adds to the stimulation and encouragement to reach your goal by November 30.
